Indian Railways Trains Database of 14,702+ Trains
Stations may be the eyes of the railway. But Trains are definitely the lifeblood of this gigantic network.
From the fleet-footed Vande Bharat Expresses which tear through the breeze, to the barely-moving Village Passenger trains which tug at their brake rods in order to not leave remote hamlets out of the mainland, the diversity and size of Indian Railways defies imagination.
And just like you need station codes to pin down the station, you need train numbers to identify specific trains.
The Issue: How Do You Find Information About A Particular Train?
If you use Indian Railways everyday, you know the drill. There are thousands of trains criss-crossing the country every single day. And with so many trains running, it is really difficult to find information about one particular train you want to travel in.
When did the timings change? Does this train run on Sunday? Was this a Superfast or a Mail train?
At TrainPNRCheck we have created the largest fastest-train database of 14,702 trains. Whether it is the daily local MEMU that you commute in, or the Rajdhani which will take you all the way from coast-to-coast across the length and breadth of India, if a train is plying its trade on the Indian railway map, you will find its train number and train details right here.
Why Should You Use this Train List?
Sure, you can just type on IRCTC. But if you have used Indian Railways servers, you know that they are slow, unresponsive, and just plain clogged. Our list is the exact opposite. Fast and responsive. Here are the reasons why our travel community loves this list:
-
Solve the “Same Name” Problem:
Indian Railways has a bizarre habit of naming trains after the nearest river, hill range, or demigod from the previous century. As a result there are many trains with names that sound a lot similar.
For instance, if you just type “Sampark Kranti” you could be referring to Karnataka Sampark Kranti or Bihar Sampark Kranti or Gujarat Sampark Kranti or another.
By searching for the unique 5-digit Train Number in our tool, you remove all ambiguity and get accurate information for the right train whose schedule you are trying to look up. - Check “Running Days” in a Jiffy: Trains don’t run every day. Some run every week. Some are fortnightly. Some only on Tuesdays and Fridays. Before you go and book a ticket or check PNR status you need to know if the train runs on the day you want to travel. Our list has “Running Days” for all trains so you don’t go to the station or book a ticket only to find out the train doesn’t run on that day.
- Confirm Train Classes before Booking: Imagine you are planning to travel in comfort and book an AC sleeper berth only to find out when you get to the station, or even at the station when you check the running time, that the train you wanted to board only has Chair Car (CC) and no Sleeper (SL) class? This list helps you figure out which train classes (1A, 2A, 3A, SL, 2S) are actually running in a particular train before you even go and book.
How to Search for a Train in This List?
We have made it as easy as making a phone call.
- Search by Number: This is the fastest and most accurate way. Just enter the unique 5-digit number (say 12951). We will immediately serve up the details for Mumbai Rajdhani Express.
- Search by Name: Don’t know the number? Don’t worry. Start typing the name (say, “Shatabdi”). We will serve up a drop down list of all Shatabdi trains in our list of 14,702 trains.
Understanding the Train Types: Vande Bharat to DEMU
Since our list of 14,702 trains cover all types of trains you will find in the Indian Railways network, when you search and get a list you may find many “Types” of trains. Here is a quick explainer:
- Vande Bharat: Semi high-speed self-propelled trains known for their speed and comfort.
- Rajdhani & Shatabdi: Premium trains which connect State Capitals to New Delhi (Rajdhani) or connect major cities over shorter distances (Shatabdi). These trains get priority over other trains in track clearances.
- Duronto: Non-stop point-to-point trains which are usually quicker than other trains as they have minimal commercial stops.
- Mail/Express: These are the workhorse trains of the network. These connect major cities and have many stops compared to premium trains.
- MEMU/DEMU: The lifeline of the suburban commuter. These are local passenger trains which stop at every small halt.
Train Facts Uncovered by our 14,702 Train Database
In the process of collecting and serving up data on over 14,000 trains, we have stumbled upon some trivia which is pretty interesting:
- Longest Running: Vivek Express (15906) covers the longest distance in India. Traveling between Dibrugarh in Assam and Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu, this train runs over 4,000 km!
- Slowest Train: At a speed of 10 kmph, the Mettupalayam Ooty Nilgiri Passenger is the slowest train in India. You can literally get down and walk faster (though we don’t recommend it!).
- Shortest Distance: There are scheduled trains in India which run for just 3 kilometers between two stations, connecting border towns like Nagpur and Ajni for example.
